Shah-i-Zinda Necropolis in Samarkand (Persian: شاه زنده meaning "The Living King") includes splendid mausoleums and ritual buildings of 9-19th centuries. The name Shah-i-Zinda is connected with the legend that Kusam ibn Abbas, the cousin of the prophet Muhammad was buried there. He came to Samarkand with the Arabian invasion in the 7th century to preach Islam. He was beheaded for his faith, but after his execution he took his head and went into the deep well (Garden of Paradise), where he's still living now. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.

The inner town of the old Khiva oasis was the last resting-place of caravans on the Silk Road before crossing the desert to Iran. It is a coherent and well-preserved example of the Muslim architecture of Central Asia: there are several outstanding structures such as the Djuma Mosque, and the mausoleums, madrasas and magnificent palaces built by Alla-Kulli-Khan at the beginning of the 19th century.
